  • Help with HLA replacement

Hi all. I'm going to be replacing afew Hydraulic Lift Adjusters today and i've got afew questions.

I did some searching on the forum and found some great info but i wanted to clarify afew things.

    1. Rocker arm bolt torque ?

I found some torque ratings that were all in the same ballpark, but i wanted to be sure before i put it all back together and cranked the engine over. I've heard 22 lbs. 16-21 lbs. and 26 lbs. So if i torque them to 22 lbs, should i be ok ???

    2. Rocker arm sequence ?

Is there a long rod connecting all the rocker arms together ? If so, then do i have to take all the rocker arms off ? not just the ones that need new HLAs. What is the bolt sequence to re-install them ?

    3. What would you recommend torqueing the valve cover bolts to ?

Sorry for having so many questions, but i can't afford to buy a Chiltons manual yet.

Thank you all in advance ! Your help is greatly appreciated !!!

Rocker arm shaft bolts torque 16 to 21 ft lbs per my Haynes Manual
Valve cover bolts 44 to 80 in. lbs.
Sequence is to start in the middle and work your way to the outside
    per Haynes as follows

    10 6 2 3 7

    9 5 1 4 8

Take each shaft off one at a time (5 bolts). You have 4 hla's on each shaft.

    I hope this helps

Sequence is to torque the middle two then work in a spiral toward the outside. But it makes more sense to do the bolts that are near a valve that is being push on first to bring the shaft down to the head. On my carby head the sequence could not be followed because the shaft springs get caught between the shaft and the perch.

The above number sequence was copied from my Haynes Manual.

Just got back from a test cruise after the repair and it's definitely running sooooo festivly smooth...

Thanks goes out to both you guys for the replies !

Special thanks to Team Lightning for providing me with every ounce of info i needed to complete the job ! I couldn't have done this repair without your help !!!

As a note to anyone reading this looking to repair your HLAs, you HAVE TO use zip ties to hold the rocker mounting rod springs back so that they don't get mashed inbetween the top of the head when you torque the bolts on the rocker mounting rods down. Also, you don't have to remove the throttle body if you take off the engine picker loop ( bolted to the left side of the head ) and the throttle cable holder ( bolted to the right side of the head ) to remove the valve cover.

Glad I could help. I like your idea of using wire ties to hold the springs,
I've never thought of that. Thanks for that info!
