  • New HLA's going in

Do brand new HLAs have to be primed/filled with oil before installing them?

    Thanks

I've never primed them. I'm sure there are other opinions though.

I was told by Matt Dickmeyer to not per prime them and to let them pump up as you crank the motor to build oil pressure.

^^^^^ Yes, correct answer! If they are pumped up when you install them, they could have too much in them. The oil will not bleed out, so they could keep the valves from closing all the way. They need to pump up the exact amount required to take out all the valve lash. If you take one of the small red plastic tubes that come on the side of an aerosol can (WD 40, carb cleaner, etc.), you use it to poke and hold the check ball in on the bottom of the HLA. At the same time, squeeze the HLA with your fingers. The oil inside will squirt out the other end of the red tube. You won't believe how slick this works, LOL. I've seen some so-called professionals put new HLAs in a vice and force the oil out.....

Also, if they're pumped up before install you will be opening the valves with the rocker shaft retaining bolts, and that runs the risk of pulling the threads out of the block (I've seen it happen, although it was on on manually adjusted OHV rockers, guy didn't back the adjuster off before install. Same deal though).
              Edit:
