  • Fuel Injector not Firing

I've been chasing a misfire all day, and I think I know what the issue is, so I'm posting here so I can get a second or third opinion on it before I do something stupid and burn up the ecu.

The code is a random misfire most of the time, occasionally it will come up as a misfire on cyl 2. I checked the spark plug, and wire, by grounding the plug on the exhaust manifold and cranking the car over. Unplugging the wire with the car running doesn't change the cars idle, but it does if you unplug 1,3,&4.

With my stethascope I listened to all the injectors, #2 is not clicking. I swapped in an injector I had laying around, and it's the same thing, so I swapped in a second injector..same deal, misfire on cyl #2.

I tested the resistance of the injectors, they're all within spec, even the other ones I swapped.

I checked for +12v at the yellow wire on cyl 1 & 2, and it's getting constant 12v.

I tried to check for the ecu ground but I can't figure that out...so I swapped the plug from injector 1 to injector 2, and #2 is clicking.

So the problem is the injector on cylinder #2 isn't being told to open, there's a short in the wire -OR- the ecu is broke?

I tested continuity from the ground lead at the injector back to the socket for the injector harness, and it's got continuity.

So now my dilemma is what to do next to fix this, or how do I go about finding this short. cylinders 1&3 and cylinders 2/4 should fire simultaneously since this is a batch fire type of vehicle right? Would it be okay if I spliced a jumper from the ground signal to cylinder 4 to the wire on cylinder 2, or would that have bad repercussions?

Is there an easy way to fix this...like jumping ground from one to the other?

    Update..

I checked continuity from the injector harness socket back to the ecu, it's good.

I swapped ECU's from my other 97 auto, fired it up and she runs like a champ...........................SO I either need a new ecu, or I gotta find a way to jerry rig the #2 fuel injector.

bah forget it...this thing runs like a boss.

nitrofarm was right about the exhaust, it is annoyingly loud lol...at least it's not too honduhish, if I'd of put a bigger pipe on it it probably would have sounded like blowing through a hollow log.

zoom, you can tie the injector to it's pair, the aspire is still batch fire through 97, so you have a pair of injectors firing at the same time. 1nand 4 are ganged and 2 and 3 are ganged IIRC. not sure how the driver is oing to like that though.

lol. Had the same thing happen to that aspire I owned a few years back, and I was going to suggest that same thing. The mechanic that sold it to us tied them together so it would pass emissions and was like yeah, ill buy you a new ecu.

              Is it 1 and 4 or 1 and 3?

how much comformal (spelling) coating do these ecu board have on them. im sure it wouldnt be something too extrememly difficult to fix. im an electronics technician and i see stuff like cracked solder and bad caps all the time. if your dillema was intermittent misfires, a cracked solder would explain it. idk what kind of injector drivers an ecu runs, but im sure it looks like a heatsinked transistor. it may be a FET, not really for sure. depends if the batch fire setup uses the same driver transistor or not. if its one per cylinder, then it could quite possbly be a bad driver trans. which could be tested outside of circuit quite easily with a multimeter.
also, look for bulging caps. theyll look a little poofed out where the x on the top of the is, thats a stress relief spot, so it was puff up when they get warm from going bad.

well, i figure it this way: 1&4 are paired mechanicaly on a 4 cyl engine (one is in "squish" while the other is in "blow") which means both intake valves are closed at those points, meaning that while #1 is on the intake stroke, it's injector is firing and #4 injector can also fire at that point (dead zone for the intake valve). SO, they should be paired like that.
