  • Aspire Disc Removal

I've got the front suspension off of an Aspire and I took everything apart to clean and paint everything but I can't seem to get either disc off of the spindle. The Hanes Manual says that once I take the caliper off the disc should come right off. Both sides have some serious rust on them but they have had PB Blaster on them for two days now and everything I get a chance I go out, check, and reapply and I still can't break them loose.

I don't know how violent I can be with these things either. I have a tenancy to break things I plan on replacing the disc but I for sure don't want to jack up anything else!

    Thanks!

There are two screws centered between the lug holes. If they're as rusty as you describe, an impact screwdriver might be handy. They can be a PITA.

if you have an axel stub you can stick in it to keep the hub from separating from the knuckle do it, then you can beat the crap out of it. I use a 4lb sledge and beat the center all the way around just trying to break the seal, then stick it where the caliper used to be and pull the sledge outward while spinning the rotor, sooner or later, it will come off. Like HTC said, make sure the retaining screws are out first.

Or, you can just buy some brand new Avella brake parts on the Four Green group buy thread and forgo all that headache and frustration.

If you got the two phillips head screws out then you should be able to smack the center of the hub pretty good - enough to break it loose

if you're not re-using the rotors, you can hit on the rotor face (you'll gain leverage), if you need to use the rotors again, hit at the hat face over the lug holes.

Main thing is to find the 2 retaining screws that are on the face. These things are often frozen right in place and will have to be heated or drilled out. The only purpose they serve (you can live without them) is to hold the rotor in place long enough to get the calipers on and/or the wheel rim. Obviously you're going to grease (anti seize preferably) the retainer screws and the hub/rotor joint when you reassemble.

I got it thanks all!!! Funny how the Hanes Manual never said anything about those two screws. Once I applied some air powered tools to it the screws came right out, then I tool a hammer and tapped around the edge of the disc and it broke right free.

                      Well ain't that sweet!
Clean up those threads and grease up everything before you put it all back together. You will never regret upgrading to Aspire fixins. In the scheme of things Aspires might well have been secretly developed solely to allay Ford/Mazda/Kia's guilt about skimping on Festy mechanicals. The primary 'car' that forum members drool over, not at all for looks, but for scavenging the suspension and brakes, and maybe swapping the engine.
