I might be a little eccentric about some things but my first time in to a timing issue on a car I zero TDC just as accurate as I can. Then I use liquid white out to scribe the crank, cam(s) disty housing to block or head and rotor to disty housing. From then on I know at a glance if something is not right.
These little marks are not noticed unless you are looking for them. It makes valve adjustments and timing setting so much easier.
Course this is a dying art, I just had a rig in with the traction control , anti-lock system, stability system, locking diff system and the check engine light on, looked like christmas! The problem? One of the camshafts was sending a out of spec signal to the computer to say it was time to change the timing chain, guides and gears. At 67 k miles ?!! I found sludge built up around the offending sensor and the other cam sensor as well. The sensor sits in engine oil. Oh....there was one more light on...CHANGE OIL !
The other systems all had the warning lights on because they were deactivated. They all modify engine power and need the cam sensors working to do this. All these lights because one person didn't change their oil!
No little scribe marks required, the computer does it all.
