    I guess the honeymoon is over. My Festiva has developed a problem that I'm hoping is carb related. No power from 1500 RPM to 3000 RPM. It doesn't do it all time but will do it for several days when it starts and of course it getting worse all time. It stumbles, bucks and drags along until it reaches 3-3500 RPM and then takes off. It's also getting harder to start. The problem feels similiar to fouled plugs, but I don't think that's it. It does smoke occasionally but uses less than a quart in 1000 miles. It has new fuel pump, filter, plugs (the old ones looked great), wires, and vacuum advance. The mechanical advance looked in very good condition with no signs of wear. I hope it's feedback carb related because I getting ready to swap for a Weber.

    One more thing that I think is pretty strange is that the distributor is advanced as far as it will go and it still feels that it could use more advance.

            When I read the title I thought bad accelerator pump.

            Fairly common problem on carbs when that's all we had for mixers before EFI.

              I would think that a bad accelerator pump would cause it to cough when you mash the accelerator. It doesn't try to die and will rev up easily with no load. When you floor it to accelerate, it will just chug along until about 3000 or 3500 RPM and then move on out. I hope it is the carb though. My new Weber arrived today although I won't be able to install it until after the Autofair next week.

                if it's not during initial tip in, then look at your ignition system... though it could easily be a combonation of the two as well

                    The dizzy doesn't fire the coil. The dizzy distributes the spark from the coil to the plugs. Have you checked to see if the timing belt has jumped a couple teeth?

                      That's interesting, I assumed it had a hall effects switch or something like it to fire the coil. Is it using a crank trigger or something? Wait a minute, it has a mechanical advance, so it must be firing the coil.

                      That is an interesting question. I've considered this because the distributor is at maximum advance, the engine (I think) is low on power and there is no problem with spark knocking.......hmmmmmm
