Hi I have a 88 festiva and recently it stopped running. Pulled the timing cover off and the cam pulls just fell off. The bolt sheared itself and the key off in the cam. I'm gonna try and get it out but I need to know the specs on the bolt if any one knows. And also if there is a specific cam key I need to use ? If any one has a cam for sale let me know if I am unsuccessful at drilling it I will need to buy on thanks for any info

Welcome Nick!
You ARE in the right place.
I don't recall a key for the cam pulley, just for the crank cogs and pulley.

Correct Karl, there is a pin in the end of the cam that the slot in the pulley aligns with.\
Before I get this to Nick, I need clarification from someone who knows. Will this cam work on the 88 engine?
It has part number K308 on it. Do the efi and the carbs use the same cam?
Did some research and answered my own question.. Looks like the 88 and 89 carb engine cams are different than the EFI's.
This cam will not work for you....sorry. Here is a link to one on ebay.

If the bolt is the same on the carb and the efi cams, I will be happy to send that to you.
Anyone here know if the bolts are the same?Last edited by 1990new; 03-22-2013, 12:58 PM.

Nick,
I just spent the last 3 days with the same issue.
I thought my belt had broken and when I got in there I found the bolt head snapped off. A quick trip to HomeDepot and I found a replacement bolt. My pin or "key" had snapped off inside the cam but it was so clean that I did not realize it was broken. I put the broken pin in and bolted it up with my shiny new bolt. Put it all together and tried to start. Nothing. Opened it up to find the bolt head snapped again. This is when I realized the pin had actually been broken the whole time. So just as you thought of, I drilled the pin out. I made my own pin from a steel punch. Slammed that sucker in there real tight and all seemed good. Got the car back together and walah! She started! My good fortune lasted a whole 5 foot voyage out of the garage where it came to a sudden end. I opened up the cover and found my replacement pin was gone.
That pin has to be in there real good. I mean snuggg snug snug and willing to handle the force. I considered welding the pin to the sprocket. However I decided my baby deserves the right fix. I am going to order a camshaft (and sprocket while I'm at it) tomorrow. Priced $109 inc shipping for the shaft and sprocket from rockauto.com
I hope this offers a little insight for you. My suggestion, after dealing with all of this already, is that you just order the cam. The new cam will come with a solid pin that has been pressed in there via hydraulic press. Much better than I can hob job together.
Let us know how it goes either way!A-mid the 80's Ford had thought, they needed something new. They asked their partner Mazda, who thought it though and through. When they were done with the 121, they knew just what to do. They sent the plans to Kia, who then applied some glue. You see Ford didn't do to much, with this product all a-new. The only thing they really did was ship it out to you. And there you have the Ford Festiva!
88 L - 85k all original & stock. Loving it!

A punch is good metal but the taper will win. A heavy roll pin put in with red stud and sleeve retainer then dotted with blue loctite rated for loose thread like the gel.
put the pulley on and let that squish around. let it set a bit before starting and hope for the best. Or drop some dough for a new cam and a total peace of mind. If you can get a performance cam now is the best excuse ever to do it!!Reflex paint by Langeman...Lifted...Tow Rig
