  • What output shaft seals?

OK, I've got to take the Festiva to the transmission shop to get the axle pounded out. If there's going to be a lot of banging going on, I'm guessing new output shaft seals are in order. Next problem, no one lists a 5-speed transmission for an '88. Does the 4-speed seals work and if so, which ones.

    Thanks,

I believe the part numbers were posted once before. Let's search. I think it was a different part number for each seal.

According to Timken they seals are the same on both the 4 and 5 speed transmissions. The part numbers are:

      223543 Left
      2007N Right
      '89 L Charcoal
      '89 L Red
      '91 Ranger
      '65 F100

I just measured the dimensions of the hole and shaft and ordered oil seals to fit. They didn't have the dust seal of the proper ones, but they held the oil back.

that is better anyway, some of us have found the parts stores incorrect and the same seal was needed on both sides.

Rock Auto shows two transmissions, A MTX and a B4M-R, both are described as 4-speeds. Oddly enough, the MTX uses different seals per side and the B4M-R uses the same seal on each side. These are the seals for the MTX transmission.

I guess that would be the B4M-R transmission. How do you identify the transmission you have?

According to rockauto.com the left and right seals have a different part number.
                TIMKEN Part # 223543
                left
                TIMKEN Part # 2007N right

Yall beat me to it while I was trying to copy and paste the numbers.

According to Advance Auto, I got that backwards.

ok, because you have an '88, there is the potential (though VERY rare) that you could have the early model B4M-R. As far as our research indicates, this was only installed in the early part of the production year and ONLY for early '88s destined for California. It is VERY likely that you have the MTX. Use your build date to determine which one you have.

I just went back and check Rock Auto and they do have them listed as I originally stated. Advance only showed seals for the B4M-R, but it's the two mentioned earlier.
