  • I just don't where to start :(

Car is running like crap. Only getting about 14 miles a gallon / hwy. Having to down swift down to 3rd to pick speed back up. Sounds like the engine is revived up way to high.

Start with the basics and go from there. Here's a game-plan for you to freshen things up:

    1. Ignition: charge your battery, clean the terminals, wires, plugs, cap, and rotor.
    2. Filtration: change the oil, oil filter, air filter, and fuel filter.
    3. Monitoring: clean and check your VAF, O2 Sensor, and Coolant Temp Sensor.
    4. Fundamentals: inflate your tires, wash your car, and check the engine for air leaks.
    5. Performance: check the ignition timing, engine compression, and check to ensure the brakes aren't dragging.
    6. Accessory: check carefully for any smoking or leaks or smells indicating a clogged catalytic converter.

Sounds like the O2 sensor, VAF, and spark plugs if you ask me... but get all of that figured out on your next day off and you'll be a lot closer to fixing her.

Does it smell funny? Do you have to rev high before it actually moves, or it takes off like your fighting the ebrake even though it's actually disengaged?

It doesn't smell funny, yes I have to rev up before going and its like I'm fighting it.

probably smoked your clutch...and flywheel needs resurfaced.

It idles fine and revs smooth doesn't it?

The Cat could very well be blocked solid. Someone with a digital temperature reader should be able to read front and back of this item and tell you what's up. If it's cold at the outlet you have the answer.
                      Good luck!

I had the same problem in my Ranger. Is your Festiva Carb'd by chance? I can probably share some experiences I've had with you, and it's bound to be one of those.

EDIT: Just saw your signature and notice it is a carb!

                        What has worked for me:

My distributor was filled with water, so check that.

I changed the plugs and wires, helped tremendously.

Check your vacuum lines, these are major for a carb!

Check your accelerator pump. This was the biggest culprit. Have a friend get inside the car when you are under the hood. Have him rev it high a few times while checking for a gas leak from the pump.

If you suspect a restriction in the exhaust system (eg clogged catalytic converter) a vaccum guage will reveal it. Look at the "sticky" thread on vacuum diagnosis at the top of the repair home page.
