I bought a couple of new Denso strainers. They tape the tiny c-clip to the instructions. I lost one somewhere. Other one will be changed when it's back on the raod again.

So I replaced the strainer on my fuel pump and cleaned out the tank and topped off with new gas , I have been smelling a really strong smell of gas now ever since I took the fuel pump out. Was I suppose to use a new gasket seal for the fuel pump it seemed to be in good shape . The smell was so strong I had to roll down the windows while driving. Any suggestions

I think you just summed it up yourself.
Other option is if you didn't torque the bolts down evenly you may have bent the metal lid on a small spot causing it not to seal fully.
I put a new oil pan gasket my first time like 9 yrs ago and there were a million bolts on my jeep cherokee. And I tried my best to tighten them evenly but I failed and my new oil pan and gasket leaked. And only from a tiny bend by one bolt.
              Maybe its similar.
Or maybe your right and just need a new seal.
              Running 40psi.....in my tires.

I have wanted to buy just that gasket, but it is shown as part of the fuel pump.
I replaced all of my rusty fuel punp sender screws with stainless ones from eBay.

I took it apart again and repositioned the gasket and torqued down screws more so will see what happens tomorrow . My screws where not rusted at all , actually in really good shape .

Dom what was on the strainer? Your Festy is a prime candidate for a new tank. They are only @ $150 shipped IIRC.

It looked like gummed up dried gas but the tank was not in bad shape no rust at all.

Ok but you might need to flush it out if the problem comes back.

Use liquid teflon on the screw threads. Also there are some little hoses under the cover plate for the fill pipe. If you were messing with the pump hoses you may have done something to the little hoses. remove the cover plate for the fill pipe and check them. Back to the teflon, the gasket does not seal the threads, you have to every time they come out.
