Howling pulleys and other engine-related noises can be diagnosed right in the driveway without moving the car. Right? Curiously my roof racks howl if there is a very specific crosswind, I think you should take on a passenger and drive with the windows open to see if you can pin point the exact location of the sound while you're at it. If all else fails it is not a huge ordeal to pull out the driveaxles to check for cooked CV joints. A couple of years ago I had a rear bearing quickly wear out during the course of 100 miles and for the last little bit it sounded like there was a love-sick wolf in the back seat. It was re-greased as an emergency measure just to get the car home and that muffled the sound a little bit. Those bearings were still round but they were a burnt brown in colour and no longer smooth.

Wow! I didnt expect what I found in the front hub.
I finally got a chance to check things out on the Festy. (I had salmonella poisining, then after starting to get over that, my other 2 cars decided to break down also!)
Front pass side wheel had the bad bearing. Pulled the hub off and the inner seal pulled out of the hub and stayed on the axle! WTF!
It was letting water in around the OUTSIDE of the seal. Dont know if the bore on the knuckle for the seal is oversize or I got a bad seal, but the grease had run out, and it was all rusty and looked like MUD in there.
I am going to pick up the hubs from the shop as soon as I am done writing this. I informed the shop about the seal issue and had them check to make to make sure the seal is sitting right and is sealing around the outside, like it should.
Never seen a seal do that before. Usually you have to pry them out. The outside of the seal was really rusty and wet. It had a tighter grip on the axle, than it did on the hub!
Weird!!!Dan
