  • 96 aspire dies after a long warm trip

it was in the 80s today and my aspire stalls out when I go on a longer trip than on a colder day when the outside temp was cooler and it was to the same location. in the past people pointed out the iac valve but before I take it off can there be anything else to check before I do this since I have more time now? it happens when it is hot outside and the water temp is hotter than winter time.

thank you all for all of your help.

open up your idle set screw 1/2 turn (counter clockwise) and retest. it sounds like a low idle stall. oh and make sure your EGR is closing all the way....

do you have a scan tool?? one that shows PIDs? if not, i recomend that you invest in one, they aren't that expensive (compaired to a shop fee). the reason i suggest this is because you have a '96 and that's OBD-II!!! which makes things a bit easier for everyone.

well I found an old air intake temp sensor and installed it and I cleaned the mass airflow sensor and used throttle body and intake cleaner and it is running better with the outside temp hot as it is but I did notice a whistling sound like the old carb days of air being drawn in someplace and it is coming from the idle adjustment screw and when I turn it clockwise it stops but when I turn it counter clock wise it makes that sound like air is being drawn into that are. is this normal? maybe I have it adjusted counter clock wise too much but it was making that sound before I started working on it today.

that screw is just for Base Idle Adjustment and there should not be any air bleeding past is from the outside of the TB. i can't recall ever having one whistle at me though...

well I think I have found the problem and it seams weird to me since I have had two festivas before and did not have this problem> I was hot today so I turned up the idlr screw to the left ti increase the idle speed then after a while the cooling fan came on and the egine tried to die but I turned the idle screw counter clockwise to increase the rpm some more and the car does not die anymore even after driving it for a while in the neighborhood and the temp is hot outside. I have not had this happen to my two festivas or any of my other cars before so I will be looking at the battery since I know it may be needing to be relaced soon and other areas of the charging system.
