  • high idle in park and neutral

I've got an 89 festiva and in either neutral or park it idles pretty high... once 'in gear' (reverse or a drive gear) it has a nice little jerk (not too severe) and then idles fine... any ideas?

Jiggle some hoses and check for a vacuum leak.

Wish I could help, but I know very little about carburetors and automatics. My inquiry would mostly be the state of your maintenance records - how recent are all of your replacement parts? With a high idle, I too would suspect a vacuum leak... especially if you've done some servicing lately involving pulling them off and such. As for the jerk, it is really hard to say exactly. I've had jerking in my car that was caused by the most random things, like dead motor mounts and dirty spark plug electrodes. Is it more of a shudder or a jerk?

          it's not carbureted

and the 'jerk' is from when it dumps from the higher idle to the 'normal' idle in a driving gear

You have a 1989 fuel injected model? Those are quite rare from what I hear...

lol... so have I... if I recall (haven't looked since purchase) production date is like 10 or 11/88...

so... since it's not carbureted... ideas? lol

2ruble: look at your throttle body. to the right of the inlet, there should be a short tube with a black rubber cap on top (cap is optional). in that tube is a screw, that is your base idle set screw.

take a screwdriver and turn it clockwise to lower idle rpm (do this only when engine is up to temp). there should be a 250-300 rpm drop from neutral to in gear, with "in gear" RPM of ~600.

from your description, you're neutral rpm is closer to 1500, it should be ~900.
