  • Student kills Festiva in Last Frontier.

Right in front of Los Anchorage Internaitonal Airport on a Sunday morning.

I was giving instruction in manual shift operation to a recent transplant from Montana. She got the vehicle (my AK 88L) bucking pretty violently starting up at a light.

Now, although the engine runs normally, the shifter appears to shift into every gear, and there are no abnormal sounds or vibrations, there apparently is no power coming out of the gearbox. We can see the clutch actuation level move on the outside of the clutch housing when actuating the clutch pedal, so the clutch actuation cable survived.

This is obviously a major internal failure, but of what part? Is there a shear pin somewhere in the clutch assembly that simply needs replacing, or what?

Quite possibly a partial or complete failure of the clutch itself. First thing I would try is loosening the clutch cable a at the adjustment nut on the end of the cable where it meets the lever on the front of the transmission. Back that off a few turns and report back with the results.
    No festiva for me ATM...

easier yet, pull the starter and look for material. if that's good, then i'm betting the shift select pin...

i can pretty much guarantee its the clutch. when the clutch died in my 89 i could shift thru all gears with engine running and no vehicle movement.

Cracked internal bracket for the shift linkage, split the transmission, weld it and assemble. Common repair here for pizza delivery drivers. They had to learn a stick with no instruction or lose their job!!
