UPDATE****Jacked it up, took front tires off, cranked it up, put it in gear and let out on the clutch. Left front hub barely moving, actually I can hold it still while the car is in gear idling. Any ideas what this could be?

The left hub was hardly turning and the right hub was spinning fast while both sides were on jack stands. That doesn't seem normal to me

oh but it is.... that's what open diffs do. the fact that you have the left spinning at all means that your calipers are releasing properly (a good thing).

Does the left axle go directly into the transmission or does the axle connect to something else that goes into the transmission? I could hear the noise a little bit and it is coming from the transmission. I don't know what to do!

both axles insert into what's called a "spider gear" which is part of the diff carrier assembly. the circlip on the end of the tripot is used as a retainer (they can be difficult to remove sometimes). likely your noise is from the input shaft bearing. it's a common enough issue, but it involves removing and spliting the trans to repair it, at which point most people just get a different trans instead of doing a full rebuild.

Are the axles supposed to have about 3/16 to 1/2 inch gap between the end of the CV joint and the transmission housing? They both have this gap

If the issue is the input shaft bearing, is there any tell tell signs on the axle or somewhere else that makes this diagnosis complete? Thanks for the help!

^^ this indicateds that the seals are missing (given that the car moves while in gear, and a 1/2" gap would mean that the axle has slipped out of the spider gear) then again, i'm speculating here because i'm not exactly sure what you're seeing.

^ there isn't an external sign of that type of failure. to verify, i would take it to a local transmission SPECIALIST and have them drive it/throw it in the air and inspect before coming to a conclusion. i'm a bit too far away to be of much use beyond this.

Thinking very seriously about fixing this myself. There is a transmission rebuild kit (TK200) on eBay for $79, does it have all of what I need? I also have a Ford manual on its way and I got a Haynes manual too. I am hoping that with the manuals and your help I can do this!

Hey, I just rebuilt one, using two to make one. It was not too hard but I have rebuilt a few RWD mazda trannies in the past. I took some pics and thought of doing a write up, but they were not complete enough to make it clear. It all depends on what is broken, and it pretty much has to come apart for you to figure that out. What does the rebuild kit give you? And what is the problem to begin with, I can't tell from the thread, it seems like your edit wiped out your original problem description.

Festyboy thinks it might be the input shaft bearing. It makes noise when I let out on the clutch, but the noise stops with the clutch pushed in.

I don't know if the rebuild kit has the input shaft bearing in it or not. Do you know where I can get a rebuild kit reasonable?

This is what the kit comes with:

                              Main shaft Bearings

                              Countershaft Bearings,

                              Differential Bearings,

                              Seals***

Is main shaft/counter shaft bearings another name for input/output shaft bearings?
