  • A/C not cooling at idle

My air condition works good on long stretches of road, but when coasting to a stoplight, or roaming through a parking lot, it blows outside temperature. Driving around town it barely has time to get cool between traffic lights. In my driveway, I can throttle up to 2500 rpm, and it will start blowing cool again.

make sure the CONDENSER fan motor is running when the A/C is on. I believe on the automatic cars it runs all the time the a/c is switched on. at hi-way speeds, the force of air rushing through the condenser pretty much does what the fan does at slower speed. even better. if the fan is working, check refrigerant charge in the sight glass on the receiver/dryer. should be very little foaming (bubbles) at a fast idle with a/c on.

Check my thread: "A/C Temp." & fix it so compressor runs all the time. Very good info. there.

I would first inspect the fins in your condenser to see if they are plugged with 25 years of dirt and debris. Good luck.

I am suspicious your system might be slightly overcharged.
