  • Just died

Well, died on my break at work. Had to push it 1nike back (4 of us) and now she only starts on starting fluid. Pump is pumping and filter doesn't feel like it has fuel. Will pull that tomorrow once we tow it home tonight after work. But on the off chance I need new line from tank to filter how hard are they to replace and how hard to drop tank? Any tips? Btw, 89 carby

Btw, should note that on E if I put 4 gallons in it brings it to 3/4 so maybe gauge is off and I ran out. But I put 4 gallons in on Sunday night and went only 30 miles roughly

Assuming you don't have a tune-up or weak spark problem, vacuum or wiring problem...In order of increasing difficulty, a few possibilities: (1)You'll probably want to remove the battery and maybe the battery tray (can't remember on that) it's worse to fight getting around things. The tray has 2 bolts up top and one underneath going straight into the fenderwell (parallel to the ground). Just back it out a little, the support should be slotted. Take off the air cleaner. Now you can get to the two obvious gas hoses. Replace them both because you don't like fire. If your filter has no gas in it, and if it made it there in the first place, then it's trickling back down to the tank. There is a type of filter that has a valve in it to prevent that. You should change filter and hoses but that may not be your problem.(2) I have to assume you checked your fuel pump by disconnecting the hose going to the carburetor, and it pumped into a container? That does not prove that the diaphram is good, it has to maintain correct pressure and suction. Judging by just your above comment I would suspect the fuel pump. If you change it, put a little oil on the arm contact and pivot points.(3) I have never had my gas tank off so I can't say for sure, but if there is enough working room you may be able to change the hose from the top of the tank to the metal gas line without removing the tank, or by dropping it slightly. It won't work if you can't get to the metal fuel line. Access the top of the tank by removing the rear seat, pull the carpet back, remove the cover on the floor, and there is the fuel hose and sending unit connector. Hopefully you can work new fuel hose between the body and tank top. (4)To completely remove the tank, remove the driver side rear quarter trim panel, access plate, filler hose & 2 vapor separator hoses (will likely be stuck tight;don't deform the tubes;lots of dirt), underneath remove the overflow hose, support the tank (wish it was now empty), remove 4 bolts holding tank and slide toward driver side and let down. If you have to go this far you may want to replace that malfunctioning sending unit, be careful of static electricity. (5) You may need to overhaul the carburetor.
When I'm good I'm very, very good and when I'm bad I'm HORRID.
