  • Pass side clunking noise help

The past 2 weeks a clunking/popping noise has shown up on my 88 mtx festy on the pass side only. I havent been able to figure out what it is yet. I am concrened if it is the steering rack?
    A brief history of components:
ALL new name brand front suspension components. Maybe a year on them. I checked for wear/play the other day by jacking pass side wheel off ground and pulling pushing on everything I could, with and without tire on. ALL is tight. Tire on, side to side push/pull and top to bottom push/pull. Tight.

I even re-torqued a bunch of bolts to make sure those were tight. All good

So what the heck is popping? Can a worn rack/rack bushing be the culprit?

As always .... Thanks in advance!

EDIT: It makes the noise when cornering slow 90 * turns and sometimes on acceleration and sometimes on deceleration

look for wear at your spring perch and also re-examine the post and pinch bolt area of that knuckle for a wear spot or signs of movment.

Sounds like a bad cv axle. Check for a torn boot.

drddan, like Festyboy said about the pinch bolt, you might want to check on it, this is what happened to the wife and I on the way home from D.M., lots of tire smoke and tire squealing, both sides now have grade 8 nuts and bolts. Good luck.

An idea can turn to dust or magic, depending on the talent that rubs against it.

I checked the pinch bolt area with a crow bar by inserting it between lca and tha knuckle cast area, and the ball joint shaft moved up and down in the bore! WIth the pinch bolt in it! The ball joint itself is still good and tight.
Looking at the pinch bolt, it looks in pretty good shape.

              Whats the deal?

And Festyboy is excitable! I always listen what he has to say, so as not to excite him!

drddan, if you look at the inboard side of the shaft you will see a sticker, small and Yellow, the axle was new two weeks back. I did check the pinch bolt at that time and it looked good, well so much for that, I installed new grade 8s. good luck with your car. I did the Capri big brake swap and at that time both LCAs were new.

I replaced bolt and tighted the heck out of it!
The old bolt I dont think was tight enough. Funny, that is the one bolt I didnt check the other night!
Old bolt is still good, (I measured it with a mic, and it is a couple thousands of an inch bigger in diameter than the new one) I replaced it because the 10 mm nut I got to fit the new bolt was longer and would take more torque, since I was planning to torqure the heck out of it.

Drove it around kinda crazily to see if it popped. No POP!!!!

                    Thank You Guys!!!!!!!!!
