  • Suspention Clunking

I've been driving two different Festys for about 7 1/2 years; Red Rocket 1988 - crashed, donor of engine, trans, front suspension, radiator, and wire harness to Black Rocket 1988 - engine compartment fire, & bad rod bearings.

On my recent purchase, White Rocket 1989, see: http://www.fordfestiva.com/forums/sh...ty-Burning-Oil

I'm getting sharp clunking sounds from the rear. These are sharper than the usual thud from running over tar strips or uneven pavement. I have bounced the rear up and down a bunch and listened and the noise seems to be coming from up high. Loose nuts holding top of spring / strut to body?

When I jack to change tires I get a pop, pop sound, as though the shock rod is sticking and then breaking loose. All the rubber bellows are broken and I can see shiny rod. Can the bellows be replaced? From where?

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks, Paul

Black Rocket 1988 L 207,XXX miles, 4 sp. AC, engine, trans, wire harness, radiator from RR
    Red Rocket 2 1988 L 138,XXX miles, 4 sp
    White Rocket 1989 L 128,XXX miles, 4 sp. AC

Sounds like the shock mounts (top rubber bushing) may be worn out. I"m not sure where to buy the bellows unless the auto parts store can order them.
Maybe someone has purchased them and will chime in.

Top rubber bushings were nice and tight, new looking. After flogging the car around sorting the oil burning the clunking got better, except when I made a sharp turn. Could have been sticky shock rods from sitting. Today I shook the back end hard, side to side, and got clunking. Jacked it up and found loose wheel bearings on both sides.

Checked Autozone for strut bellows. $25ish each. How much for new struts? $40ish each. I'll wait.

My test for shocks is to jump up and down on the bumper.
Bearing replacement is pretty simple. Photos here if needed.

Nice set of photos and explanation. Thanks.

I bounce the car up and down and then see how well the bouncing stops. Mine are within my limits and don't act spooky when driving fast on curvy roads.

Don't argue it, but nothing rides better then super sloppy shocks and soft spring travel.

Our 84 Chevy caprice is a prime example.
