  • 93Festiva Problem

So I'm driving my Festiva and the car sputters and cuts off. I try to start it up again, but it wouldn't start. I let it sit for about 30 minutes to an hour and finally it did. I thought it was the fuel pump going bad because when it stopped it felt like a car running out of gas,but I was wrong. While driving again, this time it wouldn't start for an hour while I was stuck at a busy intersection. After the tow my mechanic check the fuel pump and just couldn't figure out what was wrong with it.Miraculously, again, the car starts and I drive it home and leave it there. What could be the problem? Can anyone help? I'm thinking about bring the car to Firestone and getting a full inspection for $100.

TominMO says "This should be in the Repair Help forum; but anyway, I'm guessing an issue with ignition; perhaps overheating then starting when it's cooled down enough."

1990new says "Maybe a failed sensor such as engine temperature to ECU sender, failing ground somewhere (electrical resistance increases as the temperature increases).
Engine temperature appears to be the trigger here. Things related to temperature, old plug wires, corroded batter cable connections, failing ground at fuel pump. Usually the sensor failures give warning before failing completely. Were you having other problems before this one that caused the engine to die completely. Has the engine been running worse when it heated up.

I'm sure someone here has had this same problem, hopefully will see you post and will pinpoint the exact cause."

Someone had the same problem online at this site.http://www.hotrodders.com/forum/ford...bad-62958.html
its sounds like the same problem I have. It could be distributor, ignition switch, bad ground somewhere, or ignition module

I'd check the fuseable links on the drivers side strut tower. I had this exact problem with my 93 automatic and those fusable links were all corroded. I cleaned them and put a little di electric grease on them and it fixed the problem completely.

Yep...I had the same problem... in fact I edited my original post and added it at the end of it in the other thread.
Failed after a 35 mile drive on a very hot day.

(Duplicate post from your other thread)
I am not talking about the coolant and motor overheating, but some electronic part, which you probably do not have any simple way of checking. I only mentioned this because it has happened to me in the past on various cars, and was either an aftermarket coil or the stock electronic module in my '90 CRX (which was replaced by the dealer for free under a recall).

3 looped wires in a small brown connector block at the driver side front strut tower in the engine bay. as you look at it EGI, MAIN, HEAD. EGI is your computer and injector power, MAIN is everything else EXCEPT the headlights, and HEAD IS the headlights.

                      It's Not The Fuse Links

So I changed all three fusible links, and the car didn't turn over. What could it be?

....and make sure they are the "long-legged" fuses. There are short and long leg ones. You can compare 'em at the McParts store.

That tells me it wasn't the fusible links. Probably still an electronic gremlin.
