  • Neighbors b8 protege

The car jumps up to 4k rpm when your trying to get into gear. Your only giving it enough gas for about 1-2k rpm but it shoots up to 4 before you know what happened.. I swapped the TPS for one I had on kiazord(which ran fine) but it's been sitting on the shelf for the last ~2 yrs. Didn't really help, he said it felt a little better but it wasn't fixed.

    The car is a 94 protege with a b8 and 5 speed tranny....and about 300k miles lol..

dunno I'll have to check that out, wouldn't it do about the same thing even while cruising if you hit a bump if that was the case? this only happens between gears when you give it gas and try to let off the clutch. I was thinking a bad vaf could do it but I don't know how to test them and I don't want to swap over my S code vaf lol, might not get it back!

Shot in the dark, but with the car off, have your neighbor, push the clutch in and out and see if it effects the throttle cable going to the throttle body. Maybe something is snagging the cable under the dash?

Hydro clutch. No cable to the clutch. What happens if you just push the clutch in and don't press the gas at all? Same thing? Almost sounds like bearings or brakes might be dragging, and when the clutch is engaged (in gear) the throttle is opened up pretty wide to get it to pull at all, then as soon as you mash the clutch and the engine isn't fighting whatever it is thats dragging, it revs quickly. Have you driven the car at all? How well does it coast down hills?

For the most part it only happens when your trying to get in gear. You gotta be in first to go up hills, won't let you get in a higher gear. I didn't drive it I just rode in it.

Really sounds like something is dragging if you have to put it in first to climb a hill. Ask him if you can test drive it, or at least see how hard it is to push on flat ground in neutral. It sounds to me like he is having to floor it all the time to overcome whatever is wrong, and when he pushes the clutch in and the engine isn't trying to drag the car, it just races. But I really don't think the problem is with the engine itself, especially it is able to easily rev quickly AS SOON AS it is not trying to pull the car along with it.
