  • Disty cap and rotor mangled and shredded in 500 miles.... What??

'88 Carby festiva, with the weber conversion.

Was getting a no spark today. I checked, and the spark was arcing through the boot of the coil to the terminals of the coil. Thought it might have been a bad wire, despite replacing them within the last 2k miles. So I flipped it around, and the other end of the wire did the exact thing. I went up, sat down for a while, and started to think that the rotor might not be making good contact with the disty cap. I checked, and all the screws were tight.

I took the disty cap off, and plastic shavings fell out. The metal clip on the end of the rotor was buried next to one of the metal clips on the inside of the disty cap, and everything was shredded and mangled to pieces on the inside. The rotor and disty cap were both destroyed.

The disty cap only has about 500 miles on it, and the rotor looked fine when I replaced the cap. I DID however take it off and inspect it. I don't know if I somehow put it on crooked or something. Like seriously, I don't see how I could have done that.

Do you guys think I should go get another rotor and cap tomorrow, and see if that fixes the problem, or should I go ahead and plan on looking for another disty completely?
