That does look correct......its just a slip on connector so you really didn't do any damage by pulling the wire out of it. since it seems you know very little about auto stuff. You DO NOT need to crank on that little thing when you tighten it. Just so its snug, you wont leak coolant, and if you are worried about it. You can use a very small amount of Teflon tape on it.

Since that sensor provides a variable ground to the gage circuit, I think, couldn't you test the gage itself by touching the wire to the block, or is something else involved?

Oh don't get me wrong, when I was sixteen years old we were pulling old motors and trans out of sixties muscle cars and putting them in the cars we blew up doing dumb kid stuff out in the country. But that was a long time ago and over the years I have gotten so I prefer to pay someone to change my oil and keep my hands clean on the weekend. But when you have several old cars and several younger drivers, a guy just can't afford to have multiple cars in the shop every week without going bankrupt! Thanks for the tip about not cranking on it, when you say check it by touching it on block, would I just start the car up and see if I can get an arc from the end of the wire? Thanks!
