It seemed to run fine for a few weeks, then my daughter noticed a burnt smell upon startup. With the hood open I notice a slight whisp of smoke. This weekend I was out of town and the alt light came on and the lights dimmed. She made it home barely. The belt seems tight enough, only slack is the thickness of the belt, half one way amd half the other. I tried some belt dressing last night and charged the battery (new 7/12 and free 2 year replacement). On the way to school the light came back on and headlights dimmed. The alternator came out of the white car as did the battery. It had been having some issues when Rebecca had it, I had replaced the battery in the car and she ended up replacing the alt but it still seemed an issue when I bought the car. It tests fine at the 'Zone. I plan on putting the old alternator back in and replacing the belt. Should I sand blast the grooves on the water pump and lower pulleys? I don't want to pull the one on the alternator and am leery of taping it up to put in the cabinet.

Oh, and not timing cover plastics high or low and no signs of it touching anything else.
KP, I checked then against each other when I swappws alternators because I thought I had bad bearings but they were the same. How freely should it spin?1963 Fairlane - future NSS drag car

A blown alternator can still spin freely. Most McParts stores will test alternators for free. Pull yours and get it done.

I did prior to putting it on and it is a rebuilt alternator. Probably doesnt have 500 miles on it. I tested it prior to installing it because I knew it had a possible problem.1963 Fairlane - future NSS drag car

Tight and no corrosion. But the clamp on negative terminal was loose. Heading into town to get a replacement. Since I didnt have cables, I swapped the batteries to start it then swapped them back (after swapping the alternators out) once I got home I tried to restart it and the mainfuse blew. Changed it out and it starts fine. Battery showed 12.2 volts, put the trickle charger on it. Also last night, I added about 24 oz of distilled water to the cells in the battery.1963 Fairlane - future NSS drag car
