I check my fluid quit often. It seems the more I check it the easier it gets 5 to 10 minutes tops.

So the shifting doesn't get difficult until the trans heats up from driving. Maybe that's when the metal grinding goop that has settled to the bottom gets stirred back up into the fluid and gums up the works. This oil has never been changed. Just say'n.

Then you are more conscientious than 99% of us. Easy stuff I look over once in awhile particularly before long trips but otherwise I generally just look at the pavement under the car every morning. It's good these aren't British drivetrains; I remember reading that WWII Rolls Royce Merlin engines were notorious leakers and that Packard managed to come up with a better gasket and sealing system when they were given the good ahead to start producing Merlins. About 15 years ago an ex-Spanish air force Heinkel bomber (from the movie Battle of Britain) landed in Ottawa on tour. This WWII machine was authentic except for the Merlin engines and I did notice right away that the flight crew had put cardboard and towels on the ground underneath the engines while it was on display. I stood there trying to imagine what techs did in the days before silicone seal.

Drop and swap with Syncromesh. Put the car on stands so it's level and let it drain overnight so you get as much of the old fluid/debris out as possible.

Hey.....good news..........NAPA carries a replacement drain plug, with a magnet, that fits......except I had to grind down the first 3 threads to get it to bottom out........comes with a nice plastic washer......part # 704-1370.........$3.17 to me......

Installed the Pennzoil Synchromesh Fluid, when I started up it shifted much smoother then before, but after driving a while the shifting got sticky again. Heat has something to do with this. I might go to a synthetic oil, I think they are less sensitive to heat.

It doesn't have a weight specified on it but you can get it in a full synthetic version from Amsoil that is rated at 5W-30.

Honestly, if I had known Amsoil made it in a synthetic version I would have used it instead...oh well, next time

You read my mind! I have been reading up on it some and was going to ask about the Amsoil product!

I'm totally pleased with the results of Pennzoil, but if I can get a full synthetic for a few dollars more a quart then that's the way to go. Plus Amsoil makes great stuff.

I just replaced what appeared to be Merc, or Dex/Merc in my 5-speed, with Pennzoil Syncromesh.

Can't say I feel any difference, but it needed to be changed, just as a bit of preventative maintenance since I have no clue how long that ATF was in there for, and the transmission has 312k miles on it.
Still shifts as smooth as butter.

Lol way to kill my dreams!

Truth be told it needs adjusting more than fluid though
