You can take the circlip off and replace with a better fitting one, or even squeeze yours down until it fits better, but doing that can be tricky. If your old axle came out easy enough, reuse the circlip from it.

I've read all these posts and of all the cars I have ever dis-assembled never had a problem removing axles with a cir-clip...ever. One hand around axle and jerk out.

I was in the same boat as you until I posted basically the same thing you just did, then ran into it three times in a row

It was terrible to get off too, I tried the screw driver method, everything, but I eventually went and got a Tiger Paw, and that seemed to give me better leverage and I got them out, but I think whatever made them difficult to get out, makes them difficult to get in again, I bet the guy who started this thread has a difficult problem getting them in to. Cause the slide in easily, until I reach that half inch point. I have hammered the other end of the axle, a ton of other stuff and there is something up beyond user error. My Aspire has a little front end damage, I think something twerked, but I will get eventually. I should have kept the old ones to try those clips like you suggested, but after I compared them I pitched them, I will try to crimp them down next, Thanks,

Im wondering if leaving clip off completely has bad affect, the thing has a lot of spline in trans. Also with hub bolted on unless hub falls off (you have bigger problem if that happens) it should be good.

                Aarrgghh.......it's happening again.....

Working on a friends automatic Festiva replacing both half shafts with new ones from Rockauto. Passenger side came out OK but the driver's side has been, shall we say, uncooperative. Tried my usual tugging on the axle but all that happened was the inner CV joint sliding apart. So now all I'm left with is the inner cup stuck in the transmission. I've been prying and pulling and tapping as best I can with no success. I've packed it in for the evening but will be getting back at it tomorrow afternoon. I'll keep you posted!!!

I've always had luck using a V Wedge and put it between the transaxle and the cv joint and tapped it along the side and workeds every time for me no matter how stubborn the cv

Take a thin tough screwdriver and beat it out fron the oppsite side. I had to do the same to one of my festys when I first got it. When I pulled on the axle the CV boot just stretched, so I cut the boot and pulled the tranny. Later I beat the remaining stub out with the screwdriver.

I've been working on this stubborn axle for the past couple of hours with no success. Just to recap my situation... 93 Festiva, Auto, CV joint came apart so all that's left in the transmission is the cup-like part. I've tried most of the suggestions above and the thing hasn't shown any signs of co-operating. I really don't want to pull the other axle to try banging things out from the other side. What's really frustrating is that this isn't my car, I'm working on it as a favor for a young friend.

Any other suggestions? Anyone in Calgary want to come and give me a hand for an hour or two?

                      Thanks.

You've probably deformed the circlip already. You must be gentle and baby it from the beginning. Confucius say, man who try to yank out Festiva CV shaft without first ringing the bell, bound to hear many naughty words spoken.

It's a good night in the fastivaca garage Nothing like some ingenuity and brute force can't fix.

Attached a loop of chain to the bolt on the end of a pair of vice grips, clamped the vice grips as tightly as possible to the cup then used a 15lb maul as a makeshift slide hammer inside the looped chain. It took a few strokes but out it popped!

                            Thanks for all the suggestions!
