  • 5spd noisy in neutral

Question: when the car is in neutral (clutch engaged, shifter in neutral, car idling) there is a noise like barbles. Noise goes away when I press the clutch / when driving. Any clues?

Sounds like the throwout/release bearing is getting noisy. It could also be bearings in the trans, but I usually go with the release bearing first.

How many miles on the clutch/car? Have you serviced the transmission? Checked the fluid?

If a hammer doesn't fix it you have an electrical problem

      Thanks for the response
I serviced the clutch last spring and changed the throwout bearing. It was making that noise before the repair.

I might be wrong but I think the throw out bearing does not touch the pressure plate when the clutch is engaged (pedal not pressed).

I'll check the oil, but it's not noisy in any gear.

you may still have a throwout bearint issue dependong on the preload of the bearing and if the sealed bearing section became contaminated, OR if there's too much play on the tube that the TO slides on.

How about the pilot bearing? Was that replaced at the same time?

You are correct its not the T/O bearing if its making the noise with your foot off the pedal.Sounds like an input shaft bearing, its been a common failure on my E series trannys.

The Pilot bearing doesnt work/spin when car is in neutral like he described. It only works/spins when pedal is pressed. Any luck on the Air Bag Module?

thanks. There is plenty of oil (red?) The noise comes from the right side of the tranny, when facing it from front of car. How bad is it to change out an input bearing?

Well I've always driven the car till it destroys the tranny (which doesn't take long) But others have replaced them with success. To save money you could pull the tranny yourself & take it to a shop for a tear down. You can find the complete bearing set on ebay btw-

pilot bearing ALWAYS spins with the engine running.... it's attached to the flywheel and contacts the input shaft nose, so no matter what, it's turning unless the car is moving in gear. the TO bearing spins with the pressure plate ( there should be minimal preload on the bearing at all times). it can still be the TO.
