I just counted the number of times the check engine light blinked.
OP, there is a single wire near the master cylinder you need to ground. I took a piece of wire and put a male crimp connector on each end to do this. One end I put into the female end of the single wire connector, the other end I wedge into a place where it can ground out. Then I turn the key one. Be forewarned, there are 2 single wires under there and I'm not sure what the other one is for, it's hot as I recall. You could do this with a paperclip and another person to help.

What wires exactly have to get grounded? from what connector near the master cylinder?

There is a black single wire with female plug. I was given the idea, and i really like it, i have a aligatot clip on wire with a spade connector. I keep this in my car. Plug wire in, attacht clip to body, with key off. Get in car, turn key to hot, watch engine light blink, count blinks. If it doesnt blink, no code. Take wire off. Ta da
