  • Help! BAD Steering issues!

Sorry I haven't been around much guys, life has been crazy!

I am having a SCARY steering issue with the Festiva! Whenever I make a left turn, it will un-center the steering wheel, until I shift down, and then it will go back to centered. Also I'll be turning left, and the wheel will automatically over-pull to the left. This doens't happen on left hand turns. Car has new lower control arms, new outer tie-rod ends, new tires, and just had an alignment. (This was happening, before the alignment, I was hoping the alignment would help).

Anybody have any similar experiences? I almost don't dare drive it, but it's my DD right now!

Have you checked your steering rack? I am very surprised that Mr. Alignment took your money and did not find any problem.

Wheels in the air and yank on them. Find out what's loose first.

It's easy to replace a manual rack on a hoist.
Someone on the forum can rebuild them. There are lots of threads on that subject.

You may need a free realignment from Mr. Alignment. However, I don't know if I would trust going back to the same guy again. This time he won't be smiling with his hand out.

It's not too bad. It's hard to finagle out of the car but I believe the passenger side is how I pulled my last one I replaced. If everything else is new this would be your problem. Sounds like it's getting caught on something in the rack until you shift the angle of the wheels. Mental (mark) May have some inserts that make it so you don't have to buy a new rack. They are hard to find.

I figured it if it was getting stuck, or skipping on the rack, it would be a jolt. It's more floating...

That sounds like a strut bushings that is no longer there. When they go bad on the neon the car does a clunking in the whole steering shifts its like 20 degrees of camber caster toe instantly

This sounds like a possibility... and then it goes back to normal when turning the other way?

try pulling your e-brake all the way up and preloading the suspension like you're trying to drag race if the car feels like its cracking it knuckles before playing the piano analogy then that's probably it

if simply hitting those little blue markers for fire hydrants makes car turn another direction that is another symptom
