  • Seat belt and heat question

    1. Is it possible to swap manual seatbelts into a car with auto seat belts if so what's involved in doing so?

    2. Is it normal that my car will not warm up to temp when cold? I drove for a hour or better last night and the car only reached about 170 on my temp gauge and when hot outside usually runs 190 with a 192 stat. How can I fix this??
It's like when the cold air is moving across the engine it cools the car so fast it never warms up just seems odd to me.

I was figuring on out card board or something to block some of the air flow so it could hear up.

Too late guys. The summer was when you should have taken the dash out, split the blower housing open and cleaned all the debris off the heater core and installed a cabin filter. Air can't blow through the heater core when the fins are all plugged up with 25 years of airborne dirt and small leaves. No thermostat change can fix that.

You need flow. Try flushing the coolant system with Cascade. The heating system also gets full of crap, and cleaning it will help.

System is clean. Just rebuilt motor and flushed the radiator and also ran water through the beater core while the motor was out

Too bad we can't feed an inspection camera down to the bottom of the blower and check the fins on your heater core. The camera would likely damage the ceramic encased resistor coils if fed in from the air intake tube.

I turned my heat on when it was a warm day and the gauge was up to temp and the heat was amazing but now since the car doesn't get up to temp the heat works but isn't what it should be so I think this is the problem.

When i lived in tenessee there was nothing i could do to make the heater worth a crap.

I never tried to clean the blower. Maybe ill do that this weekend . Its. A beautiful 80 degrees here today.

Was your car ever parked under a tree with seeds, pine needles or small leaves getting in the plenumin front of the windshield? The bad thing about Festivas, is that there is no fine screen to stop it from entering. If you leave the fresh air damper open, that stuff could blow inside and onto the heater core fins. That is why I did a thread on cabin air filters. I wasn't going to ever pull out the blower again just to clean the fins. It's a lot of work to remove the driver's seat, remove the blower motor resistor, and feed an inspection camera down, but I would. Otherwise you will never know and wake up in the middle of the night, screaming "Noooooooo!".

I have a spare blower. I will open up the case and take a couple of pictures.

I haven't had the car long but never was that I know of the guy before me used it as a work car for the mines.

Eight clips and four screws + pop off the damper rod.

                            Viola.

Both dampers must be open in order to feed the inspection camera forward through the resistor hole and down to the heater core. Heat position for the damper control cables.

logan, remove the R/H access plate and check to make sure there is no debris blocking the main damper. Do you have A/C? if so, all of the dirt and debris would have accumulated on the condenser fins.

I am amazed that all the air to the side ducts has to go through that narrow 1/2" wide slot. It must rely on an air curtain principle. When A/C is on split there must be substantial mixing with air below the heater core. I presume that middle damper must do a super job to isolate the heat from the A/C air. The only way to make the A/C colder would be to install a block off valve on the heater core hose. Alternatively, if the both dampers and heater core were removed, the whole car would be flooded with cold A/C in the summer. One setting only. Change the word hot to super cold. This would be great for anyone living in Florida or Cali, even if the A/C wasn't very efficient.

logan, to answer your first question, I changed from auto to manual belts. I used a hacksaw to cut the tracks above the B-pillar mounting bolts for the manual belts.
