Follow the speedo cable down to where it enters the tranny.

Aluminum assembly is held in place with a 12mm bolt.
Undo the bolt and work it lose, some PB Blaster at this point will help!

Might want to consider unscrewing the speedo cable if your going to have to get rough with the assembly, but only as a last resort because it is sometime difficult to replace and screw down.

At this point you can use a long funnel to replace exactly the amount of Mercon III you have removed. If you don't know how much that is, your going to have to use the add and check method which means you have to remove the speedo cable from the transmission mounted assembly. Because you will be adding fluid, then checking by pushing the aluminum assembly back on to the tranny to see if you in the good range per the molded in mark on the part.

Hopefully someone will send a pic of the part and marking, otherwise the Ford manual covers it nicely and one is certain to be available on E-bay!

festiva has a REALLY STUPID CHECKing system, but thats probably because they never expected anyone to ever check the fluid for the life of this car, because little old ladies drive them.

Of course I don't think anyone thought of a festiva with 200 horsepower either :-)

                    yes, honda is a PITA....

festiva is easy to fill! i did it w/o funel. checking system isn't bad either; there isn't one on honda! you just put fluid in till it overflows from the fill whole..... whoze geniouse idea was that? oh and it took over 4 hrs to fill the trany on that, b/cyou had to run a long skinny tube down to the fill whole and hang the botte from the roof of the garage and let it slowly run in.... thank God it was a 4spd and only took around 1.9quarts, tho the other .1 quart was all over the garage floor (and then in my hair)...
