  • Tie rod boots have torn - is this serious?

    I have a 1992 Festiva with about 215K miles.

Had a back yard mechanic look at them. He said it was no big problem, it would just throw some grease. He said to fix the boots he would need to replace the tie rods.

    Should I get this fixed?

All you have to do is remove the tie rod ends to put new boots on. Personally I'd do the boots along with new Moog tie rod ends, but really it's not the most critical maintenance issue. IMO you can wait until you need to do the tie rod ends.
