  • Wiring issue

    So long story short... the wires that run along the drivers floor rubbed on the floor and melted together. So I repaired all the wiring there. Now here's where the issues come in to play...

    1) Turn signals don't work. Emergency blinkers work though.

    2) I turn on the headlights with the car running and the buzzer comes on (high and low beams work)

    All other lights work fine and car runs fine after the meltdown.

    Im guessing that the issue is in the turn signal switch itself. Is there anything else I should check out that I'm overlooking? Is it a PITA to change the turn signal switch out?

    Are you talking about the rear turn signal or all four blinkers front and back?

    Do all four blink when you push the emergency button on top of the steering column?

        Is your 10 amp METER fuse O.K.?
        If your Timer/buzzer works, it should be fine.

        If so, start the engine and retest the turn signals.
        Is the buzzer off?

        Both use the same flasher.

          Turn signals don't work with the car running. Emergency blinkers do.

          Buzzer comes on when I turn on the headlights with car running.

          The turn signal switch on the steering column is the only thing I can see that could cause this mess. The wiring is pretty simple in this car it seems.

            Reach up high behind the fuse panel and pull the connector out of the timer/buzzer and check if the turn signals work. Do it while it's buzzing. The vibration will give it away.

              If wiring melted in one spot, it's pretty safe to assume that it is melted or otherwise ruined in other places as well. A short doesn't just happen at the point of contact. It's the entire circuit that is affected. I would also guess the weak link in the equation to be the light switch as you have already guessed. They are super easy to replace, just takes a few minutes. It is actually harder to get the wiring plugs off the switch than it is to remove the rest of the parts. lol remove steering wheel, gauge cluster cover, both column covers. Then you are at the switch. #2 Phillips at underneath of column. loosed then remove plugs then remove switch. To reinstall make sure you align the turn signal cancel prongs back to the wheel properly.

                Of course exhaust all diagnosing efforts, like bravekozak is suggesting, before you buy another switch unless you already have one.

                  I can't understand why the 10A METER fuse didn't blow and prevent the meltdown. Both the turn signal and the hazard switch are connected by the timer to the flasher lamps. Every time the timer grounds, it energizes the solenoid so that the internal relay closes. Power flows through the turn signal switch inside the combibation switch to the turn flasher lamps.

                  The seat belt/ ignition key reminder should not be buzzing. I am assuming something else is fried.

                    The buzzer that is buzzing is the one in the gauge cluster.

                    I would assume that if the hazards are working then the wiring should all be okay since it using the same wiring. That only leaves the switch as the issue if Im looking at this right.
