Well then I will just have to wait for upullandpay to get a EFI Festy in so I can get the rockers from it. Would be nice to have roller lifters like in the Aspire, but that would require pulling the crankshaft, not worth the extra trouble. lol

Derp. Yeah I meant camshaft, but for some reason I typed crankshaft.

Owning a high mileage 88, I would love to go hydros. Can this be done without removing the timing belt? I have done valve adjustments before, but not completely sure of the procedure to do this swap...

I believe it just requires removing the valve cover, and unbolting the rockers and swapping the rocker arms with the hydros in.

Is a lifter also called a lash adjuster? I used to have click/tick noise for about 5 to 10 seconds and then it went away. Then I changed the oil and put in synthetic oil about 500 miles ago and now it makes that noise all the time. I put in a quart of Lucas, but that didn't help, so now I'm thinking about putting in new lifters... but can't find "lifters" on the AutoZone website.... it's always something!

Yes they are the same thing. Dont change them though. If you went from 5-10 seconds to all the time with just an oil change then I would say you have oil starvation (although stuck lifter is possible). Try a different oil filter. Preferably a different brand than what you are using now. Some Mazda engines seem more sensitive to different weights of oil. Also, a solvent like Marvel Mystery Oil has unclogged stuck lifters for some people.

do not use white purorlator oil filters!!! Two in a row made a bunch of noise the expensive yellow grippy ones work fine and even the fram filters are okay. the old school super text from Walmart that are not sold anymore did not make noise either

New rod bearings nearly tripled my oil pressure....

Someone didn't keep up on filters, with addition of good ol 5w garbage viscosity oil, nearly destroyed that poor crank..

10w and new rod meat saved the day.

I put in Mobil 5w 40 synthetic (the gold 15,000 mile oil) and a Bosch oil filter.

How much Marvel Mystery Oil would you put in? Is changing the oil filter and top it off with MMO enough? That's 300 to 400 ml I think ( I don't have my manual handy)

A safe amount would be an oil filter amount. Since skme will burn off id not hesitate to slightly overfill

Ok, so I changed back to a Fram oil filter and put about 12oz. of Marvel Mystery Oil in. About how many miles should I have to drive until the "clicking" noise goes away? How many miles should I drive it making this noise, will it cause other problems if not fixed? I'm not real sure what lifters do.

Also, what oil (brand and weight) do you use in your Festy? Thanks for the help!

I used the the Purolator Classic numerous times, I have has zero problems, and rarely get lifter ticks. The only filters I got allot of lifter ticks out of were garbage STP filters.
Also I only use Fram if it is for a car that takes a cartridge filter like my folk's Fusion.

But I do have a Pureone Purolator in there this time, and a mix of different weight oils, mostly 10-30, with some 5-20, and 10-40. I have had a couple lifter ticks on startup, but I think that is mostly.

The only thing is, I thought lifter ticks on startup were a trait of hydralic lifters, not solid and other types of lifters?

Im using purolator classic with rotella 15w40. Valvetrain 50% quieter than when I bought the car. Same goes for Rotella T6 in my mazdaspeed with the corresponding purolator synthetic filter.
