Right outside Downtown Greensboro. I think that its not shifting into gear even though it feels like it is. I noticed that the bushing/ bearing or whatever that was in the shifter bottom that fits into the linkage was destroyed when the bolt came loose and its empty now. It was threw the clutch tensionor cable loose. I'm hoping that when I go out tomorrow and fix those things that it will actually shift into gear at that the transmission isn't fried.

I will be up your way twice this week. Once this Thursday to drop off my dads car and then I will be back Saturday evening through Sunday.

I'm off tomorrow so I am hoping that I can resolve the issues unless of course I fried the transmission.

About an hour from me, and I need to go to the LKQ there later this week. I might be able to swing by when I do, if you don't have a handle on it by then.

Well I'm working on it now. Putting a shorter shifter from a civic in there I pulled at the junkyard. OEM one so I don't have to worry about it breaking like the ebay one. Putting that in now. The shifts are a lot tighter now. Once I get that all finished up and off jack stands Im going to jump it off and hope that it fixes the problem. Other wise its either got to be the clutch or the tranny went bad. I did notice while i was under there that the end of the shifter linkage that attaches to the transmission is super loose. Looks like there should be some bushings or something that aren't there. That will be my next thing i try to fix if attaching the linkage back at the shifter doesn't fix the prob.

Silver Lining though. While I was at the pullapart I did find a festiva cargo cover. Super stoked about that. Looks really good in there.

So still no luck. I don't think its getting into gear.

I thought maybe the clutch was staying engaged but that isn't the case. As I still have to push it into to start the car. but when i move the shifter into the positions the gears should be i don't have to use the clutch which makes me think that its not even trying to go into gear.

It got dark on me but this probably means its a linkage issue? Any thoughts?

Do you have bushings on your shifter bolts? There are two needed for each bolt. Otherwise the shifter will flop all over.

Check out the shifter diagram to see where they go.

Does anyone know if the Aspire shifter bushings are the same as the Festiva ones?

I don't but there weren't any on there when I pulled the stock shift and it was going into gear that point? Would this keep it from shifting into gear? Also are those needed where the linkage meets the tranny? Cause I don't think there are any on that end either and it's really loose.

Also could it be a clutch cable issue?

When the shifter is in neutral it should jump quickly to the middle and stand straight up at attention.

You can see from the diagram I posted, that the bushings are inside both yokes of the shift rod.

Just pop the hood for a quick look at the clutch cable. It's right on top of the transmission. Howeber, that is rarely an issue.

When its in neutral it is floppy back and forth. This is with a civic shifter without the bushings on either side. I don't think that it has bushings on the end that connects to the transmission either.

Just took a video to post. Uploading now. But nothing happens when I move the shifter through the gear positions. It doesn't even fill like it is moving the linkage at all.

I am really thinking that its my clutch cable at this point. As I have no free play what so ever in the pedal even when I back the tension off it almost completely. And before hand i had to much play. I also know that at some point I need to overhaul the linkage system as mine is super sloppy. If anybody has some good linkage and bushings I am in the market.

But I was reading symptoms of a bad clutch cable and it sounds alot like the issues I am having.

                            "No Shifting
A broken or stretched clutch cable can cause symptoms that resemble other clutch problems, particularly complete failure of the clutch. The clutch will often stop working altogether, causing the vehicle to remain stationary when shifted into gear."

OK, with the engine running, not trying to use the pedal at all, does it try to grind if you try to put it into gear? I am NOT suggesting that you force it into gear, but if you move it like you are going for first, for instance, do you hear the grinding? If so, please back of instantly!
