I smell Gas!

Did the obligatory search and found nothing. Cruising in PePe is pretty good after I finally fixed my oil leak but now I am smelling unburned gas. My mileage could be better but the smell is starting to annoy me. I can smell it at stops or when stuck in gridlock. PePe(my festy) has probably never had anything done to him other than an oil change before I got him. Since then: cold air intake, oil pan gasket & filter(3x's to get it right), tranny gasket and filter. Is there a pcv valve or fuel filter that I need to change? I don't think the fuel smell is a fire hazard and I'd hate to find out. Can't find my manual(cheap one). Any assist is appreciated.

and have you tried to sniff under the hood to narrow the search area down a bit?

Tip the rear seat forward and see if you smell it there. This is the location of the fuel pump and lines.

Any spots on the ground?

OOPS!

Bad assumption on my part. 91 ford Festiva GL, 3 spd auto, 150,000+ miles. I have tried under the hood and no strong odor but I was unaware of where the fuel pump was located, no spots but the driveway is dirty.. That would explain why I am the only one to smell it and why it smells so strong. Is there any danger of me not getting to it before the wknd? I would like any easy fix but it usually don't work out that way.

Flip the seat forward and then pull the carpet forward. This will expose the access cover to the fule pump. remove the cover and inspect the area for leaks.

Removed cover(s)

Moved seat forward and pulled off a cover that is on the side wall exposing the fuel lines leading to and from the tank and loosened the cover that sits on top of the fuel tank. Do not see anything out of the norm but I will leave both of these covers loose/off and see what I see when I smell that fuel again. It has been sitting overnight so any fuel may have already dried up.

the hoses to the charcoal canister come off easily. seems every time I replace the fuel filter (low on the firewall, driver's side) the hose comes off. I know because of the smell of gas fumes next time I get in to start the car.

No smell yet.

I've been running witj one cover(sidewall) off and the other loose(fuel pump) and still no odor. I am beginning to think that I only get that fume smell when the tank is real low. I've got a 1/2 tank and nothing but I will check my hoses again and probably should replace the filters?.
