  • Engine ID by the numbers

Just bought an ,89 festiva L. The previous owner (2nd) said the engine ad been replaced but didn't have any other info. Seems like there should be some numbers that will identify the exact type of engine and when it was made. Just wondering where to find them and how to interpretate to get the info I'm after.

    Thanx

Should be a casting on the head around the exhaust manifold irc.
    My b6 (2nd gen) had b61k there.

Yeah I would like to know this information as well, and how to read the ID number.

PO said the the engine was out of an 89, but didn't tell me whether it was a Carb'd engine, or a FI engine.

this isn't the answer but looking up part#s for the head and block was surprising. there were 2 blocks for the 88/89. one for cars built before 7/87 and one after. there were 2 heads for 88/89. one for each year. for 90-93 there were 2 heads, one for ATX and one for MTX. there were 3 different blocks for 90-93. one for 1990. one for 91/92 and one for 1993. it gets worse if you needed a short block. there were 5 possibilities for the 90-93 cars but that had more to do with the big-small crank nose divide in 92.

How did you come across this info? Could you provide any links? That would be great!

          Thanks!

O.k. So my head had a casting number of B301. Figured I'd just type that into the ol' search engine and out would pop the answer. "You have an engine from a yyyy ford festiva and here are it's specs". Nope. Just a bunch of auto parts ads. Anyone able to shed some light on the origin of my motor with a casting number of B301. I'd appreciate it.

Sweet! Does that make the car worth more than the 600 bucks I laid out for it?

Called the dealer today. Parts guy said the B301 number was meaningless. Without a part number less than 10 years oldthat he could punch into his computer, there was nothing he could tell me.
Service tech said there are no numbers on these engines. They did say I could bring it by and see if any of their guys could do a visual i.d.

Does mine look like yours? What you got?

First time posting pics. Not sure how they'll turn out.

Yeah, the rest of the car is just as "clean". Greasy hand-prints everywhere inside and out. mechanic owned previously. At least I know he's been all through it. LOL.

Yeah I feel pretty silly. What was I thinking calling a ford dealer with a question about a ford car??
Just looking at pics online looks like I prolly have some type of B3 motor. If anybody has any additional useful information - that would be appreciated.

My 91 fi engine has the same b301 on it.

I don't have that sweet e/f to the right of it though. (is that a casting flaw?)
