I just changed the thermostat in a 93 Festiva with a 2 stage one. It doesn't seem to warm up enough to open the stat. There is no circulation in the radiator with the cap off. Air temp 22 degrees. Thanks

Did you install it with the t-stat springs facing in, toward the head?

These engines run very cold in the winter. I have no idea why, but they just do.

Yes to the spring and do they not get hot enough to open the stat?

When you said it didn't warm up, I thought you meant while idling and not moving. But if moving, I would recommend blocking off the bumper and grill openings to build up heat. Torque is correct; they are very small engines that don't generate as much heat as larger engines, and have too much cooling (at least for winter) coming through the openings. If you want a little air to still get to the radiator, then just don't block off the grill on the driver side.

I may try that. I tried to block the radiator and it didn't help any.

Yeah these engines never hit the 195* mark in temps under 30* unless your idling for a long time.

With a 195* thermostat by itself my car would usually sit at 123*

But having the grill blocked off
helps give me around a 5-10* increase in coolant temps depending on whether I'm in the city or on the freeway.
Which would keep it between 130-140*

I'm thinking the bottom of the front bumper may also need to be blocked off to help control the airflow over the radiator while driving.
That may be good for another 5-15* depending on the amount of airflow it stops over the radiator.

Using the re-circulation feature on your climate control also helps a little bit as well.

Takes half an hour for my t-stat to open up in -20 C weather.

For everyone who wants to add special characters, use charmap. Or, you may find it easier to use the extended character set by holding the ALT key and then typing the four digit number on the number pad.

For instance, the degree sign is ALT+0176. °
