  • Puff, Puff, Puff!

For you seasoned Festy owners, I have some current symtoms to diagnose and I am relatively new to these cars. My 93L EFI stock B3 idles rough....almost like a miss....but only at idle. The exhaust at the muffler doesn't sound smooth and normal to me (as I am used to on other cars) but more like a puff, puff, puff. The car seems to be sluggish in 1st gear starting out (like a miss) and then runs fine as it gets moving. It accelerates adequately for 63 HP and cruises fine at 65 mph. New plugs, wires, disty cap/rotor and fuel filter already installed. Seafoam treatment in fuel tank and upper cylinders had no effect.

    Any thoughts?

Have you done a compression test? How about ignition timing?

Mine did that too when I first got it. The idle control system was all jacked up. Make sure it is working.

I plan on checking timing and compression as soon as I get a free Saturday.

detailed results will help us diag your issue. concentrate on the dry compression numbers and verify your cam timing before setting the ignition timing. then if you have one, throw a vacuum gauge on the engine and watch what it does.

+2. For idle, check your IAC. Its on the right corner back of fuel rail. It goes by temp of radiator fluid in lines and sometimes gets gunked up. It also has a screw on top for idle control. Mine was gunked up too.

Thanks bear. Festyboy helped me with my base idle screw. It had a chewed up o-ring and the small hole under the o-ring had been plugged. I got that fixed. I do believe the IAC is gunked up as well and is stuck open. Unplugging it....engine hot or cold has no effect.

I have an update for you guys to help me with. Finally got around to doing a compression test today on this warm Saturday in Georgia. I would appreciate your diagnosis when you have time. Keep in mind I have been driving this car 200 miles per day for 3 months at an average of 37 MPG. Here are the numbers:

                  #1 132
                  #2 140
#3 70 (Wet test did not increase PSI)
#4 20 (Wet test did not increase PSI)

Well that explains your rough idle. Hard to say what broke, exhaust valve. Head gasket. Either way, with compression like that. Its rebuild, or swap time.

You're getting 37MPG with those compression numbers? That's actually really impressive. Do you have access to a leakdown cylinder tester? I agree though... might just be easier to throw in a new cylinder head and a fresh gasket than trying to change out the valves.

Yep 37 MPG's consistently. Where is a good resource for a new head? Not too many JY's around here.
