  • Stalling, Rolling Resistence & Terrible Smell

Ive had no trouble with Hot Rod in three years so I guess it's time. 224k miles and for the past week car runs fine but stalls when coming to a stop. Starts right back up and runs fine until next traffic light. Today I put Seafoam in to clean the system and adjusted the idle. Now it won't stay cranked and there is a sudden resistance in the car moving forward. Terrible smell (not the sulfur smell of o2) and whiffs of smoke coming from under the hood. I plan on pulling plugs this weekend, checking wires, etc but now it cranks but won't run. Belt is squealing slightly but checked it and see no resistance there. I'm perplexed. Ideas?

    Thanks

Sounds like your brakes. Check the parking brake too. Do all wheels turn freely?

It's not the brakes for sure. They're good and the smell is nothing like brakes dragging. I had to give up this evening due to darkness but will get on it again tomorrow. Just occured to me I may have a pully ceasing up and the smell is the belt burning. Worst smell I've gotten out of a car.

Clutch? On the hoist in neutral and turn the front wheels by hand.

I'll try that. I hadn't thought about the clutch.

Clutch seems fine so I'm starting over and deal with one issue at a time. The car went from stalling at traffic lights to not staying cranked at all. Three years ago (12k miles) I did a complete tune up after changing the head (new plugs, wires, dist cap, TPS and cleaned TB). I'm going to clean TB again but wondering what other suggestions you might have.

Wheel bearings? For the resistance? Smell? Re adjust the idle screw to get it running again? Did it only die at redlights/stops while pressing the brakes? Could be vacuum leak

Got it running again but now, after it warms up, it's stalling at stops when applying brakes. So I'm thinking a vacuum leak as well. Bearings are shot. Got it rolling and the frontend sounds like a helicopter taking off. My sons response? Never heard that before (as though it just suddenly got that bad). Got a girlfriend so now he doesn't pay attention to anything but her. Of course I was never like that at his age. LOLOL SO now I'll work on the vacuum leak and then figure the bearing thing out. I understand those can be a bear on this car.

It's all good. I still love this little car and it's a good opportunity to get him under the hood.

Here's what I've checked: plugs, wires, disty, vacuum connections, fuel filter, air filter/intake, cleaned TB, TPS changed two years ago, idle, clutch, EFI connections, fuses, fusible links and all these are good. Car runs great (smooth) while cool and moving when warm but stalls at lights and stop signs. What am I missing?

Did you find out what the whifs of smoke was from? I am wondering if it is overheating....

Yea...I was hoping no one brought that up. It's not overheating. The smoke and smell were due to me being stupid. We'll just leave it at that. Safe to say there are days I'm not the brightest light bulb in the chandelier.

A couple of ideas: The By-Pass Air Control Valve Could be sticking open when the engine warms up making the mixture lean. You can try blowing through the passages with a clean vacuum hose when the coolant is hot--this is when the air should be cut off. A vacuum leak is also a good possibility. If the engine is warmed up, idling, and the car is parked, will it die when you step on the brake? If it does, isolate the power brake booster line and try the brake again to check for a leaking diaphram causing the engine to stall; or better, check the booster with a hand vacuum pump to see if it's holding vacuum. Also, a partially open BPA valve combined with the extra air from the brake booster might make the mixture lean enough to kill the engine.
When I'm good I'm very, very good and when I'm bad I'm HORRID.

I'm 6'6" and 300lbs so it's a tight fit. I got the car cranked and started up the driveway but really didn't take the time to adjust the seat to my fit. So the car won't move so I start really giving it some throttle but still won't move. So I give it more throttle and smoke starts billowing everywhere and a horrible burning smell hit me. Can you guess what I was doing? felt really stupid when I figured it out. htd
