  • G5MR Rebuild Kit Advice

I'm trying to figure out if a G25MR rebuild kit will work with this transmission? I found some places that list the parts working on both transmissions, but I'd like to get a more solid answer before buying anything. I understand the G25MR has beefier synchro's, but will they fit the G5MR? Am I wasting my time with a rebuild? Thanks for your time and any help.

AFAIK the g5 is cable and g25 is hydro. That's the only difference I think. I stand to be corrected by the more experienced guys though

Not technically correct. The housings/clutch actuation have nothing to do with their designation. Generaly, yes the early trans were cable, and were G5, the later were hydro, and G25 AFAIK
There had to have been some crossover though between the two as there was a 3-4 year range when both cable & hydro trans were produced simultaneously

The G25 had "updated" synchonizers, and to the best of my knowledge that was just an update in materials used in them, otherwise everything is interchangeable.

I wish I did. I am having a tough time finding anything even for the G25MR.

I will let you know if I come across something. At least knowing all the G25MR stuff will work helps make it easier to source parts.

            Thanks for the confirmation Rocketman!

I read a couple posts talking about using the internals from an 99+ escort zx2 transmission and putting them into the G series case. I read a few things back and forth about whether that would work or not. You don't happen to know anything about the viability of that by chance? Thanks again.

I've contemplated this situation many times, and what I would do.
I think all roads point me to a kia Rio box.

Anybody know if you can use the Capri half shaft on the Rio box?

Iirc. Damkid knows a bit about swapping bits in these trannies.
Hope he can chime in to confirm if it was his thread that I saw.

I'm seriously questioning this too. I get the impression it is slightly weaker, but the availability of it makes it tempting. I even have a low km parts Rio I can snatch for 250$.

Not sure of the whole combination need. I think I read the half-shaft works, then use the 323 axle shafts. All stuff I already have. (Please don't trust me on this!) Not sure about the which LCA's or tierod ends to use though.

Edit - Thanks Moz! I have some reading to do.

From what I've read. Rio shafts and Capri /323 shafts are the same length.
You still need aspire LCA s
You only need aspire tie rods if using aspire knuckles.

I would prefer the half shaft for traction and less torque steer.

But yeah. If the half shaft fits, its a no brainer

Only outer tie rods that is.
And its only because the hole in the knuckle is slightly bigger than the Festiva one.

The aspire rack ends (inner tie rods) are approx 3/8"-1/2" longer so only use them if you have alignment issues

You don't use aspire LCAs with the capri/323 axles. Unless you want negative camber (which can be desirable) but then you may have issues with the axles over-extending, I can't comment authoritatively on that.
