  • Brake Lights Not Working!

I have ran into a small problem with my 89 Festy L.
I have it ready for the road after months of working on it, and now a small problem stands in my way!
My brake light won't work when I press the brake.
The driving lights, headlights, turn signals, and parking lights all work!
So I don't see what's going on right now.
I've checked the fuses and they look good, except for one in the fusable links tower.
But I'm replacing that later to see if it's the problem.
If you have any other ideas or clues to what is going on please let me know!
    Thanks for looking!

Check above the pedal where it meets the switch and make sure the brake light switch is plugged in. Mine comes unplugged from time to time.

Fusible links are not the issue.
The Stop Lamp circuit (hot at all times) is very simple. Power comes from the STOP fuse (GN/W) to the Stop Lamp Switch (normally open) and then to the back of the car (GN/R). The three stop lamps are grounded to the body below the rear hatch striker.

Probe the stop lamp switch. (GN/W) should be hot.

If O.K., then probe the stop lamp switch (GN/R) should be hot when pedal is pushed.

      Good luck.

I had an old T-Bird that almost drove me through an intersection because of this! Unknown to me the brake pedal sensor switch wires (Located on the Brake Pedal itself) had failed from constant movement over the years. Might be something to look at on yours.

My first realization of this was when I was driving along with my cruise control on I tried to hit my brakes fairly hard to stop for a yellow light. My car responded with the auto kicking down to second and gunning the engine!!! Luckily I still managed to stop in time after quickly hitting cancel on the cruise control, but that was a spooky situation.
