Several months ago, my 88 Festiva, 135k miles, overheated and I pulled into a repair shop and the problem was diagonosed as a "warped head". It was replaced. A part of the "repair" consisted of them having taken the wire that ran to the radiator fan out of the harness and putting it onto the negative pole of the battery. This situation made it impossible to drive it with the lights on.
I managed to make it about 300 miles further on before I parked it. However, at that point, the engine smoked very, very badly. Even when it idles it smokes terribly. My question is: How can I tell if the smoke is from a cracked block or from a blown gasket? Would only a shop be able to tell me this, and, if so, how much does this diagnosis usually cost? And what about that wire that was taken out of the harness and placed directly onto the negative pole of the battery? Any practical suggestions on how do I deal with this?
