  • manual transmission disassembly

hi guys I've got a 1996 festiva with a bad input shaft bearing. I have gotten the transmission out of the car and taken the case off and I just cant get the gears out it seems to be getting stuck on the big diff gear how are you supposed to take the gear assembly out?.I have taken the reverse gear out and slid the gear selector out of the way but it is still being held by one bolt that seems impossible to get to. Any help will be greatly appreciated thankyou.

This topic needs to be moved plz- Here is a very nice tutorial on a G series. Still applies except yours is smaller. http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showt...-5th-Gear-Swap
Some people like to read fiction,I prefer to read repair manuals. Weird I know-

I was trying to remember my e-series tranny rebuild last year, and it is a bit vague. But looking at the images for the G-series in this link, I remember one big difference which is probably what you are asking about. In the g-series, the shift gate is down near the stick-shift link assembly, well out of the way from the diff. But in the e-series it is right under all the shift forks, and it blocks the removal of the differential, if I recall. There are two 6 mm screws, with 10 mm heads, that hold that shift gate head in place.
I remember it was a real bear getting one of those two screws undone. Unfortunately, I do not remember how I did it. I do remember all the shift rods had to be completely pulled out of the way. And that putting it back together required a real dance with just setting the worst of the two screws in place, really loose, wiggling the diff in, then contorting to do them up. Wish I could be more help than that.

Page 22 & 23 of the e-series manual Bravekozak linked above shows the gear assembly has to be fully pulled out to be able to get to the screws that hold in the shift gate, and it has to be removed to pull the diff. But, if it is your input shaft bearing you don't need to pull the diff unless you plan to change those bearings too.

Where did you purchase the bearings from?

Thanks guys got it apart but was just wondering if the input shaft bearing at the base of the shaft is supposed to be on the shaft or in the case ?

In the one I rebuilt the input shaft bearing at the base was snug on the shaft, and stayed on the shaft when it was pulled from the case.
