  • shifter linkage ?

my mech, is putting in the 5 speed (used to be a 4) and showed me where the linkage
connects to the tranny. looks like a u-joint with a large pin through it. don't know
what WAS there, a rubber sleve or what? antway he said he thought he could
alieviate the play by drilling out the pin and putting a larger bolt through it with
    a lock nut.

I know some of you have "been there" so what did you do to fix the "slop" in both ends
    of the linkage?

    thanks

There are two short bushings and a shoulder bolt that go in there. Some members have had these for sale at times.
When I'm good I'm very, very good and when I'm bad I'm HORRID.

there's plastic bushings that go in the larger U shape bracket. they are actually pushed into the ends of the T shape change rod coming out of the trans. pretty sure they are the same bushings that go in the bottom of the shifter. here's the sequence top to bottom: bolt, bushing, bushing, lockwasher, nut. if the bushings i think the same bushings might be used with the pin. that would have to be drilled out. if you're replacing the pin with a bolt i'd suggest trying not to have any of the bolt threads in the bushing.

You will also need the rubber bushing that goes in the stabalizer bar that connect the shifter to
to the transmission . It has a metal sleeve inside it so unless it has deteriorated to the point where
it falls out of the rod when you remove the nut and pull it off, you will need to remove the sleeve
before you can pull the old bushing out.

You could also use one of these boots

Here are the plastic bushings for the linkage at the shifter and universal.

You need a minimum of 4 of these / unless you get the Corksport bronzoil bushings
And if you decide to rebuild your shifter, one of these

            and one of these
