  • Idle rough with electrical Load

    HI,
The festy I am working on is a 91 efi 5spd no power steering no A/C (yet) . At cold Idle it idles fine(800-900). It drives great and accelerates great. At warm idle it idles ok (600-700) any time I add an electrical load, apply brakes, turn on headlights, the Idle drops to 200 to 400 and some time stalls out. Any Ideas on where I should start looking for the problem? I am going to put a meter on the Idle speed control solenoid this weekend to see if it is in tolerance. Any thing else I should be looking out for ?

You may want to check the alternator and battery. My battery only measures 11 volts or so and it does that.

Thanks, I will check that also. Anyone got a clean looking volt meter setup they would like to share. I would like to put on it the car full time, Digital Maybe?

I briefly had a voltmeter gauge hooked up last month through my radio wiring. Worked great and was as accurate as my fancy multimeter even though the gauge was really cheap.

Funny enough, I just noticed my white car is starting to do similar things as of a few days ago.

I turn the lights on and my radio died for a split second and came back on. I also noticed that when the turn signal went on my lights seemed to dim slightly with each blink. I then started to flip the lights on and off, high beam low beam, and noticed that it would sometimes affect the idle! I kept playing with the turn signal / light switch and after moving it around steady for a minute noticed that it no longer would cause the issue. Does doing the same on yours produce similar results? Didn't check the brake lights though.

I'm guessing that this means some major wiring runs through the light switch. I haven't had a chance to check it out yet but thought I would comment.

When I hit the brakes the Idle comes down and stays down until I let up on the peddle. So a lot of times when I am stopping at the light I have the clutch down with my left foot my right toes on the brake and my right heel on the gas holding the idle up hopin my foot doesn't slip.

What sort of vacuum reading are you getting? Compression solid? Ignition timing? Grounds clean? Fuel filter fresh?

When you hit the brakes the reason it brings your idle down is the brake booster. Maybe it has sprung a small leak

Will throw the vacuum gage on it and drive around some. Will recheck grounds but I have cleaned most of the major ones. Timing, compression, fuel filter, tune up all good. Drives great. 37-40 mpg @70mph. Idle comes down with any electrical load. Will recheck vac and intake hoses.

                      IAC valve? (idle air control)

Might be gummy, try cleaning it
