  • Installilng distributor question

My new used B6 didn't come with it's own distributor, so I need to swap my old one on.

I didin't put my engine at TDC or anything. I know one of the hash marks on the cam pulley is at the top, and that the distributor goes on two ways. I guess I have a 50/50 chance of getting this right and if I mess up I don't think it will hurt anything. I'll just waste some time.

Are there any hints at install? If I pull the end spark plug and see that the piston is at the top would this help?

I think the cam turns twice with every one revolution of the crank, right?

I'll be reading my Ford shop manual tonight so it may tell me.

Hoping to finish in the morning and get Aqua running!

    Any hints appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Karl

Close, the cam turns once for every 2 turns of the crankshaft.

Your best off just getting it to tdc with the timing marks lined up and then put the distributor in. No sense in doing it twice. im not sure about the b6 but the distributor should only go in one way.

What gergorian said. With timing marks lined up at 12 and 3, the rotor should point at the #1 plug wire, which I think would be at about 10 o'clock if you were viewing the disty from the driver's fender. And I also think it only goes in one way.

^ yea i think one side is wider to prevent it from going in 180 out. Sure, you could force it... But youd know if didnt feel right.

Ya'll were right: the B3/B6 distributor only went in one way. I tried both ways to make sure.

Slowly, it's coming together. Yeah, I'm slow.

            Thanks a bunch!

No problem! I finally just got my engine running and the cam broken in with all the Dickmeyer upgrades and went to check timing and it was off the scale advanced. I checked the cam / crank timing and it was spot on. Talked to Matt and he said the cam was ground with 4 degrees advance so I am getting a new timing light ( just have a crappy HF one now) and going to try again. I thought the dist could be off but I remembered that it goes in one way so I know how you feel.

Speaking of timing lights, I have an old one and I'd like to buy a nicer one. Any recommendations for a mid to upper priced timing light?

Thanks Greg. I'll be checking them out this weekend then!

Oh, BTW, Aqua started today. Running a bit rough and loud, but I think she just needs more oil and some TLC.
