  • Help with fuel tank replacement

Hey guys, I am changing out the fuel tank on my 88 festiva. I got the old tank out, and ended up breaking off two rusted out hose ends. Problem is I haven't the slightest idea where these hoses went to. I can't find any place that they broke off except from the tank itself under the big filler hole. I will post pics, but it looks like on the old tank there are two connectors under the filler hole, but on the new tank they're not there. I ordered a carb tank so unless they shipped the wrong one it should be right. The hole on top looks the same, and I think for an efi it's a bigger top hole. The first one that broke off was zip tied with the other hoses running down the side of the car by the fuel fill tube. It went down right under the filler hole. The second one that broke runs to the front of the car with the brake lines. I'm pretty sure this also ran up to right beneath the filler hole. Would these two possible have been connected and somehow ended up fused to the tank? Thanks

These two pictures are of the first one that broke off

So the pics beneath the fill hole suck. In the first on the piece of hose is the little triangle looking piece. The second on broke off almost flush with the tank and you can't see it in the pic.

I am looking online away various fuel tanks and looked at the difference between the efi tank and carb tank. The efi tank has the connection running under the fill hole. I have a carbed 88... But the new tank doesn't have that connection...

the little lines on mine got mixed up so I just threw them on but mines efi th only one that needs to go somewhere special is the one that loops under the filler neck

Here are the two tanks the efi has the little line running under the fill hose. The carb doesn't have this. The two that broke off my carb tank are the ends of the little line on the efi tank. Not sure how to proceed...

I will help you out. Vent your fuel cap and throw away all the garbage that all that spaghetti hooks up to. Just cap everything that isn't a fuel line. It's hidden anyway. No one will know it isn't there. No problemo.

I just used a screwdriver and removed the blocking plate at the top of the cap. Just blow into the cap to confirm it's open after you snap it back together. Rubber plugs are available at any auto parts store.

I couldn't figure out where the hoses went either after I took my gas tank out to change my brake lines. Anyway the gas cap is vented to the outside and you never have to unscrew it slowly. There is never any pressure inside. I found the sexy red gas cap at the junk yard.

Popped the gas cap apart and there wasn't a blocking plate I have another cap in the garage so I'll take a look at that one.

As long as there is a vent release, then drill a couple of holes. I'm not sure if you can just buy a vented cap or not.

                              What's a vent release?
