  • I hate to bug but she's not starting.

So once again the bird has fallen and can't get up.

I turn the key and she turns but just won't start. I've replaced the dist cap and spark plugs. I stuck a screw driver and got a spark all the way down.

I thought it might be my fuel pump. So I sprayed starter fluid in but it didn't start. Even if the fuel pump is bad that should still work right?

Other than that I've been working on the cooling, replaced the Thermostat and seal Just added 50/50 antifreeze today.

    I'm out of ideas...

    Maybe ignition coil?

If you have spark, and you have fuel, then it might mean that you are out of time? Are you due for a timing belt?

Check to see if your timing belt snapped lol:laughing3:

There wouldn't be spark if the timing belt is broken. Starting issues are sometimes traced back to the crappy fusible links. I always recommend changing over to the long legged cartridge fuses.

Did you move the rotor when you had the distributor cap off? It goes on in one of 3 positions, and of course only one is correct.

.. and for reference the firing order is 1 4 3 2, looking at the business end of the distributor cap (from the driver's side wheel) 1 is at the top left then count counter clockwise.

As far as the timing it could use some looking at but I haven't touched it at all. And I am getting spark all the way down to the plug. Firing order I was told is 1342 and that's how I've been driving it, but I'll try the 1432 pattern as well.

When you talk about fuses are we talking about the ones inside the car? Up under to the left of the steering wheel?

Yeah, sorry I mistyped that it IS 1342.

Awesome, as far as firing order the #1 spark plug is the one on the timing belt side and #4 distributor cap side if I'm in front of the car looking at it? ImageUploadedByTapatalk1398178768.270371.jpg

                And the fuseable links?

So I got everything in the right firing order. She's turning over but not catching.

I guess next would be the fusible links. They look dirty and a little wet.

I'm having trouble removing the three wires that go in the bottom. These things are definitely in bad shape.

Should I just snip these and buy fuses?

I've snapped the blades within the fusible link block there being too rough on them with pliers.

Soak it in PB Blaster for a while before you try to pull the links off.

Clean up the terminal blades with an emery board and install pink green pink.

                          They have these at autozone?

I did the PB blast but these things just won't move.

Can I bypass the whole box and just snip the wires?

They're available at any McParts store, yeah. PBB takes a bit to loosen it up. You could bypass the block but don't just twist and electrical tape, this is the entirety of the Festiva's electrical system lol. Just wish the factory hadn't cheaped out with fusible links.

Yeah... the ground wires and fusible link contact terminals aren't exactly phenomenal after 20-25 years of wear and tear. Habitually on all of my projects, I get into the habit of resistance testing my grounds and sanding/spraying/polishing all of the ground wires and fusible link terminal points. Works wonders every single time.
