  • Radiator removal on an automatic.....

.... with transmission lines hooked to it.

Anyone know what I need to do to disconnect the right transmission line on the radiator at the bottom?? There seems to be no way to get to it??

    Thanks in advance!

Well, I cut the old tranny cooler hoses off. I spent $27 at Autozone to match similar hoses up. It needed them anyway. If you want to save the hoses, you may be able to unthread the lines from the bottom of the radiator. I didn't try this route, and you might want to seal the fitting when you reinstall them.

      I thought of doing that.

Got the radiator out and put the new one in. Here is a picture of the new one and the old one. No, its not camera trickery, that is what the old radiator looks like. It doesn't leak, but I thought it was time to replace the radiator. Plus I put a different rad fan in too. The old one didn't work.
Now that I have everything in order & put back in, the stupid fan stays on all the time ...... grrrrr! I've tried everything to see what the problem is but nothing, so it must be the sensor in the thermostat housing!!
Anyone know if an auto parts store sells these or can be replaced????

I just replaced one of those sensors in the thermostat housing on my friend Sammy's 92 GL last week. His old one had the opposite problem. The fan would not
come on when water got hot and started flowing. The fan would run when the AC was turned on though.
Replaced it with a used one I had and it fixed the problem.
Does the fan go off when you pull the wire off the sensor. If it does, you can be pretty sure that you need a new sensor. Your might try
cleaning the sensor tip and connection point good first to see if deposits on it are creating a ground all the time.

If the fan does not go off when you disconnect the wire from the sensor, then it is probably something other than the sensor.
It's getting a ground from another source telling it to keep the fan running.

1990 shop manual section 27-10 covers the fan and troubleshooting guidelines.

The fan switch (bullet connection) is normally closed, which keeps the fan off. When the car is on and warmed up, the switch opens, which turns on the fan. When you unplug the bullet connector, the fan will run as default.

Could be a bad switch, relay, or wiring, to begin with. Consult shop manual.

The thermoswitch should not cost that much. I think I paid around $14 for the last one I bought.

Well, I really messed up above. The bullet connector is the temp sender sensor, not the thermoswitch.

The thermoswitch (fan switch) is a spade connector. And it costs more than $14.00! It's $41.00 at AZone. However, Rockauto has them for around $22.00, but I didn't figure shipping. If you order from RA, combine with other parts and check shipping costs carefully. Maybe order more than one or two...

                    Sorry about that!

Good news! I just checked RA and the cheapest switch (under $23) is also cheapest shipping: about $26.00 for one shipped. Not too bad! The other choice is over $30 though. Always gotta check stuff and play around with costs at RA, but you can usually work something good out. Also check occasional sales at Advance and maybe the other stores. Advance often runs 15% or 20% off sales, with a future $25 off $50 or more coupon. I just used one of those recently.

Carefully mixing and matching different "suppliers" is the way to go!

                      Thanks Karl,
I tried another used relay and the fan still stays on. I'm going to get a new relay and try it again. If it doesn't work still then I'm going to RA to get the switch.

You are totally correct Karl. I knew that.
My mind must have been in a muddle last night...had it all backward about the thermostat.

please remove my backward post so it does not confuse anyone else. Thanks.

                              Muleskinner asked:

"Is the part number 1T1120, Airtex / Wells??"

That's the more expensive part, which is a dollar more and about five dollars more expensive to ship.

I'd go with the SMP #TS113 for $22.79 and it's only $3.54 to ship. Remember to use your discount code for 5% off!

Since you have more than one Festiva, I'd consider getting two of these, along with a few other parts you may need soon. Play with the shipping and different manufacturers to lower your cost. A more expensive part could have much cheaper shipping! Gotta play around with Rockauto sometimes or the shipping is too expensive. Fortunately, for this one part, it ain't.
